NOT SUITABLE FOR SENSITIVE READERS

The second and formidable installment of the Commander Verhoeven series: the great novel that marked the beginning of Lemaitre's dazzling international career

Several years have passed since the serial killer case that forever altered his life, and Commander Camille Verhoeven has still not fully recovered when a new challenge once again involves him personally and professionally: Alex, a thirty-year-old woman, has disappeared. She is no ordinary woman, and Verhoeven, with no suspects or clues, must delve into the investigation of her personality to find her, while she agonizes in an abandoned warehouse. Every minute that passes could be her last. And he would never forgive himself.

The author of Vestido de novia and Irène once again shakes us with this chilling thriller, a diabolical and unpredictable plot that confirms him as the king of crime fiction. Alex catapulted Lemaitre to international fame, being acclaimed as the successor to Stieg Larsson; today his style is recognized as unique and unmistakable and he has a legion of followers.

One of the best books of the year according to the Financial Times, in the process of being adapted for film, winner of the Dagger Award and the Livre de Poche Readers' Award for Crime Fiction.

By the winner of the Goncourt Prize,
the European Crime Fiction Prize
and the Best Novel Valencia Negra Prize,
with over half a million readers.

Critics have said...
«I avoid reading translated novels, but I read Pierre Lemaitre: a truly excellent thriller author.»
Stephen King

«Intrigue, measured tension, psychological precision and unease from the hand of another great author in French crime fiction.»
Culturamas

«Hard-hitting and chilling (woe betide those who can't stand rats!) and with good (and hateful) characters.»
Lilian Neuman, Cultura/s, La Vanguardia

«For those who enjoy the purest, high-level crime novel. It doesn't matter how trained the reader is, because every twist in the plot is unpredictable, cruel and devastating. The narrative technique of the author, creator of other delights such as See You Up There, makes this thriller one of the essential books in any library.»
María Oruña, Woman

«Lemaitre makes it impossible to sleep with this story acclaimed as a masterpiece.»
Tiempo

«Fifty percent suspense, fifty percent investigation, one hundred percent magnificent.»
Le Figaro

«An original and engrossing ability to generate disbelief in the reader.»
Jury of the Crime Writers Association International Dagger Award

«Lemaitre is, right now, the best and most in-form French noir novelist, a guy capable of treading on the heels of the master (Banville) Black.»
Laura Fernández, El Cultural

«The "Verhoeven" trilogy is read in one go and exudes a remarkable melancholy for an adorable minipolice and the human race in general. Don't miss it.»
