The Alienist

The thriller on which the TV series The Alienist is based.

New York, 1896. John Schuyler Moore, a crime reporter for The New York Times, receives a call in the middle of the night from his old Harvard classmate, the famous alienist (as psychologists were known then) Laszlo Kreizler, who summons him to the Williamsburg Bridge, the scene of a horrible murder.

Theodore Roosevelt, the city's police chief, asks for the collaboration of both friends to investigate the crime, a daring initiative, as the alienist is viewed with distrust by a conservative society that believes a murderer is born and not made. They are joined by Sara Howard, the first woman to work in the police station, and the Isaacson brothers, pioneers in new investigation techniques.

While the group tries to trace the psychological profile of a murderer about whom they know nothing, he seems to know them perfectly...
