In 1962, La ciudad y los perros received the Biblioteca Breve Prize and a few months later it was published after circumventing Franco's censorship. Thus began the literary journey of this work with which Mario Vargas Llosa achieved international recognition and which today is considered one of the best novels in Spanish of the 20th century.

Translated into thirty languages, it is set in the Leoncio Prado Military School. The protagonists, a group of young people who are "educated" in an implacable and violent military discipline, learn to survive in an environment where racial prejudices and differences between social and economic classes are deeply rooted; where everyone shows themselves as they are not in reality and the transgression of established norms seems to be the only way out.

La ciudad y los perros is not only a diatribe against brutality, but also a frontal attack on the erroneous concept of virility and a misunderstood military education. Throughout the pages of this extraordinary novel, the vehemence and passion of youth run wild, reaching a fury, a rage and a fanaticism that nullify all sensitivity.
