The Civilization of Spectacle
In the past, culture was a kind of conscience that prevented us from turning our backs on reality. Now, it acts as a mechanism of distraction and entertainment. "Culture, in the sense traditionally given to this word, is today on the verge of disappearing." The trivialization of the arts and literature, the triumph of yellow journalism and the frivolity of politics are symptoms of a greater evil that afflicts contemporary society: the reckless idea of converting our natural propensity to have fun into a supreme good. In the past, culture was a kind of conscience that prevented us from turning our backs on reality. Now, it acts as a mechanism of distraction and entertainment. The figure of the intellectual, who structured the entire twentieth century, has today disappeared from public debate. Although some sign manifestos or participate in controversies, the truth is that their impact on society is minimal. Aware of this situation, many have opted for discreet silence. Like a good uncomfortable spirit, Vargas Llosa gives us a very harsh radiography of our time and our culture. "This short essay does not aspire to swell the high number of interpretations about contemporary culture, only to record the metamorphosis that what was still understood as culture when my generation entered school or university has undergone, and the motley material that has replaced it, an imposture that seems to have been carried out with ease, in general acquiescence." |
