Complete Stories

Revised edition of all the short stories by Benedetti, one of the greatest short story writers of the 20th century in Spanish.

Reading Benedetti is embarking on a journey from the realm of the imagination that is restored daily and where the sender is one's own heart. In these Complete Short Stories we find love stories, political stories, humorous and even tragic stories, but above all a series of mirrors where it is possible to see our lives. We can all recognize ourselves in his characters.

The volume includes the short stories from the books Esta mañana, Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia, Geografías and Despistes y franquezas. And, for the first time, this edition includes the short stories from Buzón de tiempo and El porvenir de mi pasado.

Critics have said...
«These Complete Short Stories prove that Mario Benedetti is one of the great short story writers of our language and of our century. In Benedetti's hands, the short story appears as a genre of incomparable ductility and flexibility. It is the oldest and the newest. In it everything has been done and everything is yet to be done.»
José Emilio Pacheco

«The work of the great Uruguayan poet is presented to us not only as the sum of a vital experience, but, above all, as the persistent and successful search for a meaning, that of the human being on the planet, in the country, in the city or in the village, simply at home or in collective action. There are many reasons that lead us to read Benedetti. Perhaps the main one is precisely this: that the poet has become the voice of his own people.»
José Saramago

«An author who speaks to us of love, power and commitment in the most direct and passionate way possible.»
World Literature Today

«Benedetti in Italian means "blessed". All I can say is that: blessed be generous and honest women and men, like him.»
Eduardo Galeano
