The Savage Detectives

Between detective narrative, "road" novel, biographical tale, and chronicle, The Savage Detectives is considered by critics and audiences worldwide as one of the best and most original fictions written in recent decades.

One of the best books in Spanish of the last 25 years according to Babelia.

"Everything that begins as comedy inevitably ends as mystery."

Two young Latin American poets, Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima, embark on an adventure that will span several decades and cross different countries. A symbol of rebellion and the need to break with established reality, their lives represent the aspirations of an entire generation. The search in 1975 for the mysterious Mexican writer Cesárea Tinajero, who disappeared and was forgotten in the years following the revolution, serves as the beginning of a relentless journey marked by love, death, the desire for freedom, humor, and literature.

In this novel, the dazzling literary and personal universe of Roberto Bolaño is sketched out, as if it were a set of Chinese boxes.

The Savage Detectives won the Herralde and Rómulo Gallegos awards, and was rated by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post as one of the best novels published in 2007.

Reviews:
"A carousel of language and narrative skill that is undoubtedly the best written in Spanish in recent decades."
Iván Thays, Babelia

"Bolaño has proven that literature can do everything."
Jonathan Lethem

"A kind of narrative intoxication that leaves us overwhelmed, smiling in a daze or in admiration."
Fabrice Gabriel, Les Inrockuptibles

"A masterpiece."
San Francisco Chronicle

"One of the most respected and influential authors of his generation [...]. At once funny and, in a sense, intensely terrifying."
John Banville, The Nation

"Bolaño's myth has served to boost the recognition of a work where there was originality, where there was quality."
Mario Vargas Llosa

"He became a central short story writer and novelist, perhaps the most outstanding of his generation, undoubtedly the most original and the most unusual."
Jorge Edwards
