Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) fue un escritor y caricaturista estadounidense. Cursó estudios de Literatura en la Universidad de Oxford, pero nunca llegó a doctorarse. Como homenaje a su padre, que deseaba que hubiera conseguido un doctorado en la universidad, comenzó a usar el pseudónimo literario con el que hoy en día es mundialmente conocido.

La mayor parte de sus obras están escritas en rima y suelen introducir juegos divertidos e inteligentes con el lenguaje. Esto las convierte en obras de una extrema complejidad a la hora de traducir. Así ocurre, por ejemplo, con El gato Garabato, su obra de mayor éxito. Gran parte del triunfo del libro se debe a haberlo publicado en un momento -los años 50- en que las lecturas escolares presentaban personajes infantiles demasiado rígidos, extremadamente educados y poco imaginativos, con los queningún niño podía ni quería sentirse identificado. En un momento como ese, nació El gato Garabato: dinámico y travieso y que arrastra un torrente de imaginación y caos al hogar de dos niños.
