The world’s most famous philosophy professor explores in these essays the moral and civic dilemmas that animate our public life. PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS AWARD FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES 2018 Originally published in 2008, the articles collected here explore the moral and civic dilemmas that animate our public life and address some of the most controversial ethical and political questions of our times, such as affirmative action, assisted suicide, abortion, gay rights, stem cell research, pollution permits, the moral limits of markets, the meaning of tolerance and civility, individual rights versus community claims, and the role of religion in public life. Interweaving several recurring questions, Michael J. Sandel analyzes a series of hot topics with his customary mastery and seeks to evoke in the reader the progressive impoverishment of public discourse that has accompanied what in his opinion is the failure of the liberal model, while proposing the development of richer and more substantial forms of democratic socialization. The need to give greater moral meaning to collective political life becomes even more pressing from a progressive perspective, for as Sandel repeatedly warns throughout the book, the narrowest moralism and fundamentalism quickly occupy all those terrains that progressives dare not tread. Reviews: «Michael Sandel is one of the world's best known and most influential political theorists. These essays are lucid, incisive, and insightful. Sandel has something important and valuable to say on every topic he addresses.» «Anyone interested in the political success of conservatism in recent years should be interested in this critical analysis.» «No matter what your political views are. Michael Sandel's Public Philosophy is exciting, thought-provoking, demanding, and encouraging.» |
