The Story of a Teacher

A seminal novel of contemporary Spanish literature

The moving story of a woman who knew how to find her destiny

In 1923, Gabriela receives her teaching degree. It is the beginning of a dream that will lead her to work in various rural schools in Spain and Equatorial Guinea. This book is the narration of her life, told from memory, during the 1920s and up to the beginning of the Civil War. With the backdrop of the Republic, the October Revolution, and the war, it evokes those times of poverty, ignorance, and oppression, and shows the important role of education and of those who fought to educate a country.

Told from the truth of memory, with feelings we barely dare to acknowledge and a progressive awakening of consciousness, the story of this woman who in a difficult era knew how to find her destiny opens a path to hope and idealism for all of us.

Foreword by Lara Moreno

Critics have said:
«Light, joy, and enigma.»
Javier Vallejo, Babelia

«Mythical. [...] An essential work.»
Ane Amondarain, La Vanguardia

«I have witnessed the unusual fact of finding here all the themes, all the fires that are rising today, because they have been burning for centuries. In this book I have found consciousness. It seems to speak to us of the past and in reality it challenges us.»
Lara Moreno

«The definitive edition of a fundamental work in Spanish literature: [...] a novel in which the vindication of quality education, the return to the rural world, and the defense of women's rights converge.»
Alberto Martín, Diario de León

«A pioneering novel of "historical memory." [...] A benchmark for education.»
Amelia Castilla, El País

«Josefina sought to share a vision of struggle and the search for identity.»
Soledad Puértolas

«Her work is exemplary for entire generations of boys and girls. She was a very interesting novelist and a very intelligent woman.»
Luis Goytisolo

«A highly accomplished author who has taken Castilian literature all over the world. [...] Her style was clear, transparent, imbued with thought.»
Antonio Colinas

«Her works reveal her social commitment, denouncing the lack of freedom, which preserves the memory of that post-war generation.»
Gustavo Martín Garzo

«A tribute to her mother and to all the teacher-heroines of the Republic.»
Emma Rodríguez, El Mundo

«Women, female sensitivity, teaching, memory, and reading structure her creative legacy.»
El Diario Montañés
