2022: SARAMAGO YEAR

A novel that reads with the eagerness of a thriller but immerses us in life's essential questions.

"Chaos is an order to be deciphered."
Book of Contraries

What happens when Tertuliano Máximo Afonso discovers at thirty-eight years old that a man who is his exact copy, and with whom he has no blood relation, lives in his city? This is the question Saramago, once again exploring the depths of the soul, poses in The Double.

How do we know who we are? What constitutes identity? What defines us as individual and unique persons? Can we assume that our voice, our features, even the smallest distinguishing mark, can be repeated in another person? Could we swap places with our double without our loved ones noticing?

Innovating against novelistic conventions, Saramago transforms the narrator's voice into an active subject, in a metaliterary game he puts at the service of the story and that goes far beyond strictly formal ruptures. A novel that reads with the eagerness of a thriller but immerses us in life's essential questions.

Critics have said:
«A novelistic discourse structured with rare mastery, where the reader is immersed from the first page. Saramago surprises us until the very end».
Darío Villanueva, El Cultural

«A novel that is read with the passion of unraveling an enigma».
José María Pozuelo Yvancos, ABCultural

«Saramago makes a fleeting reality comprehensible, with parables sustained by imagination, compassion, and irony».
Nobel Committee

«A man with a sensibility and a capacity to see and understand that are far beyond what common mortals generally see and understand».
Héctor Abad Faciolince

«Saramago is an example, a most dignified style of life and literature, which demonstrates the possibility of swimming against the current [...]. His word has the value of an antifreeze, of a personal remedy against the gales of cynicism that surround us».
Luis García Montero

«I don't know, nor do I want to know, where Saramago got that diabolical narrative tone, hard and pious at the same time, [...] that allows him to tell so close to the heart and at the same time so close to history».
Luis Landero

«Saramago writes novels about myths to demystify them, [...] always to address the reality around him, to deal with current problems that belong to everyone, and so that everything is clear from the beginning».
Rafael Conte, Babelia

«Like Günter Grass or Cees Nooteboom, Saramago aspires to connect with an audience that transcends national boundaries».
El País
