Emily Dickinson (Amherst, Massachusetts, 1830-1886) nació en el seno una familia rica y puritana de Nueva Inglaterra. Estudió en la academia de Amherst y en el seminario femenino de Mount Holyoke, cerca de Boston, pero su delicada salud y su rebeldía religiosa la llevaron a abandonar el curso antes de tiempo. Dickinson, que fue una joven activa y llena de vida, se encerró a los treinta años en la casa paterna y ya no salió. No obstante, mantuvo el contacto con los seres queridos a través de sus cartas, tan cuidadosamente elaboradas como sus poemas. Poco después de su encierro, habiéndose reafirmado en su vocación poética, escribió al periodista y crítico Thomas Higginson para saber si sus versos «estaban vivos».
