The Long Walk to Freedom

The autobiography of Nelson Mandela written by his own hand.

The life of an extraordinary man, an international hero, one of the great moral and political leaders of our time.

Long Walk to Freedom is the inspiring story of Nelson Mandela's epic life, a story of adversity, resistance, and final triumph told with the clarity and eloquence of a born leader.

For millions of people, Nelson Mandela represents the triumph of dignity and hope over despair and hatred, of self-discipline and love over persecution and ignominy. His extraordinary life, dedicated to the struggle against racial oppression, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize and elevated him to the presidency of his country.

Since his triumphant release from prison in 1990, he became the center of the most complex and encouraging political event of recent times.

In Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela recounts the path of his extraordinary life. We will discover his first steps as a student and intern in Johannesburg, the slow awakening of his political consciousness, the breakup of his first marriage, the painful separation from his children, the twenty-seven years he spent in prison - full of events - his freedom and the definitive establishment of a multiracial democracy in South Africa.

A masterful work destined to occupy a place of honor among the memoirs of the most important figures in history.

Mandela's words:
«I was not born with a hunger for freedom, I was born free in every aspect that I could know. [...] Only when I began to understand that my childhood freedom was an illusion, when I discovered, as a young man, that my freedom had already been taken from me, was when I began to long for it.»

«I like friends who have independent minds, because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.»

«We must use time wisely and realize that the time is always ripe to do right.»

Critics have said:
«One of the most positive books you will read.»
GQ

«Indispensable... The story of a unique life.»
Anthony Sampson

«It shines with the luminosity of faith in the invincible nature of human hope and dignity. Unforgettable...»
Andri Brink

«An epic story of struggle and learning and growth. It tells the life of a man whose idealism and hope inspired a world prone to cynicism. It should be a must-read.»
Mary Benson, Daily Telegraph

«A piece of recent history and an example for those who drown in the small daily miseries.»
