Zafira is the Hunter, and she disguises herself as a man to venture into the cursed forest of Arz and procure food for her people. Nasir, the Prince of Death, murders those foolish enough to challenge his father, the sultan. Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya, but neither wishes to be. War looms, and the Arz grows ever wider, more and more land swallowed by its cursed shadow. When Zafira decides to seek the artifact that could restore magic to her world and stop the curse, Nasir is sent on a very similar mission: to retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter.
