Seventeen-year-old Ellery has an obsession with mystery. Her mother's twin sister disappeared when she was a teenager in Echo Ridges, a small New England town that has recently made headlines for the murder of another girl, the local high school prom queen.

When Ellery and her own twin brother Ezra have to move in with their grandmother in town, Ellery's obsession collides with reality. Another girl has disappeared, someone has publicly threatened the next prom queen, and the boy Ellery likes is the police's main suspect.

Ellery knows quite a bit about secrets. Her mother has them; her grandmother does too. And the longer she spends in Echo Ridge, the clearer it becomes that everyone there is hiding something... but not everyone has known who to trust.
