The Breath of the Gods

Warbreaker, Brandon Sanderson's second novel, is a rara avis in epic fantasy: a complete narrative in a single volume, with all the imagination, adventure, magic, and endearing characters that this author, destined to inherit the throne of an entire genre, has accustomed us to.

Years ago, the monarch of Idris signed a treaty with the kingdom of Hallandren according to which King Dedelin would send his eldest daughter, Vivenna, to marry Susebron, the god-king of Hallandren. Vivenna has been trained her entire life to be a suitable bride for Susebron and thus fulfill her duty and help forge a stable peace between the two kingdoms. That was the plan, but the monarch of Idris sends his disobedient and independent daughter Siri, instead of Vivenna.

While trying to find her place in Susebron's court, Siri discovers the hidden truth about the god-king. In Idris, Vivenna feels uneasy and fears that her sister is not prepared for this new life, so she decides to travel to Hallandren. There she meets the people of Idris who work in the capital, Telir, and begins a new life of espionage and sabotage. Vivenna's plan is to rescue Siri, although perhaps she neither needs nor wishes to be saved.
