Action and feelings enliven the pages of this novel, which, through careful research, goes beyond the backdrop of the Comunero revolt to document a Castile plunged into agitated social upheaval.

Nicolás Sánchez-Albornoz
"With his usual mastery, Alfonso Domingo recreates in this novel one of the most popular and politically manipulated passages of our history. A must-read to understand the Comunero War."
Julio Llamazares

This is a story of love and war from five hundred years ago. The story of María Pacheco and Juan de Padilla, and of the communities of Castile -in 2021 and 2022 the V centenary is commemorated-, a love story that survives war and time, in a moment of political and social upheaval that closely resembles the era in which we live.
In 1526, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, future glory of Spanish letters, visits his sister María Pacheco, who lives in exile in the cathedral of Oporto. María, the widow of Juan de Padilla, kept the Comunero flame alive in Toledo nine months after the defeat of the Battle of Villalar, in 1521, until she had to go into exile in Portugal. The siblings, who shared that happy childhood in the Alhambra of Granada, play a game of chess through which all the events of the War of the Communities that occurred years before are recalled.
