The Case of Dexter Ward
A short novel by H. P. Lovecraft, the American master of suspense, horror, and science fiction. The author explores here the mystery of reincarnation through alchemy, necromancy, and the occult sciences. The story takes place in 1918 and describes how Charles Dexter Ward becomes obsessed with a distant ancestor, Joseph Curwen, a supposed sorcerer of evil habits. Ward also physically resembles Curwen and tries to repeat his ancestor's alchemical feats. It evokes the events of the terrible witchcraft process that occurred in Salem (Massachusetts) in the 17th century with a style that immediately draws the reader in.
