Johannes is a boy when Austria is annexed to the Third Reich and is seduced by Hitler's doctrine. His parents do not agree with the regime, but during the war he is seriously wounded and is forced to stay at home. A few weeks later he discovers that his parents are hiding a young Jewish woman, Elsa. Little by little Johannes ends up falling in love with her in such a morbid way that she becomes his obsession, and when the young woman confesses that her love is not reciprocated, they both begin a strange relationship of mutual dependence. When the war ends, Johannes knows that this means he will lose Elsa, and to prevent that from happening he decides to lie to her to keep her forever.
