Yuri was born with a rare heart condition and is condemned to live confined to his room; he cannot interact with other children or go to school. Doctors believe his illness is related to the Chernobyl accident. His parents, a couple of Ukrainian artists who left their country after the nuclear disaster, arrange for him a private tutor, Maggie, a young New Yorker who decided to leave her successful career on Wall Street for a quiet life on Long Island.
