Oskar Matzerath, one of the most endearing literary characters of our time, is a child who refuses to grow up because he dislikes the petty-bourgeois society of Nazism. He is also a mischievous dwarf who smashes windows; a vulnerable being, always in love with a woman he idealizes; a gifted individual obsessed with sex; a being with dark eyelashes and beautiful hands, and a repulsive hunchback; a murderer above all morality who does not hesitate to eliminate anyone who bothers him but manages to create captivating music with his drum.

Published in 1959, the novel was an immediate success and inaugurated new German literature. Half a century later, the fascination it arouses has not ended. What once seemed provocative, pornographic, or blasphemous is now almost anecdotal, but the superb style, the genius, the lucidity of its cruel critique, and the unbridled imagination remain. Oskar Matzerath continues to drum, and his drumming continues to thrill.

Günter Grass (Danzig, 1927-Lübeck, 2015) se hizo escritor después de haber recibido una sólida formación como escultor y dibujante. Su obra comprende poemas, dramas y, sobre todo, novelas.

El tambor de hojalata (Alfaguara, 2009), una de las cumbres de la literatura europea contemporánea, compone junto con Años de perro (Alfaguara, 2013) y El gato y el ratón (Alfaguara, 1999) la célebre «Trilogía de Danzig». Su fama se ha cimentado sobre estas y otras obras maestras como El rodaballo (Alfaguara, 1999), Es cuento largo (Alfaguara, 1997) o A paso de cangrejo (Alfaguara, 2003).
