«El tiempo es un problema para nosotros, un tembloroso y exigente problema, acaso el más vital de la metafísica; la eternidad, un juego o una fatigada esperanza.»
The essay that gives this book its title, originally published in 1936, is presented as a history of that image, that crude word enriched by human disagreements: eternity, an artifice that frees us [...] from the oppression of succession, also the subject of "The Doctrine of Cycles" and "Circular Time". The nature of the metaphorical is the subject of "The Kennings" and "The Metaphor"; that of translation, it is the subject of "The Translators of 'The Thousand and One Nights'". In "The Approach to Almotásim", which completes the volume along with "The Art of Insulting", Borges, in reviewing in painstaking and erudite detail the book of the same name, plays a game: the book does not exist (at least outside his imagination). Time and space, and consequently eternity and infinity, are ultimately the basic material of this work that contains the germ that Borges' genius would unfold for another half-century.

Jorge Luis Borges nació en Buenos Aires el 24 de agosto de 1899. Entre 1914 y 1921 vivió con su familia en Europa. A su regreso funda las revistas Prisma y Proa, y publica Fervor de Buenos Aires (1923) e Historia universal de la infamia (1935). Autor de poesía, cuento, ensayo y trabajos en colaboración, en las décadas siguientes su obra crece, es traducida a más de veinticinco idiomas y alcanza reconocimiento mundial. Fue presidente de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores, director de la Biblioteca Nacional, miembro de la Academia Argentina de Letras y profesor de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Recibió importantes distinciones de gobiernos extranjeros, y el título de doctor honoris causa de las universidades de Columbia, Yale, Oxford, Michigan, Santiago de Chile, La Sorbona y Harvard. Obtuvo, entre otros galardones, el Premio Nacional de Literatura (Argentina, 1956) y el Cervantes (España, 1979). Considerado uno de los más importantes escritores en lengua hispana de la historia de la literatura, murió en Ginebra el 14 de junio de 1986.
