Stephen Hawking (Oxford, 1942-Cambridge, 2018) fue uno de los científicos más prestigiosos del siglo XX. Tras licenciarse en física en Oxford, se doctoró en cosmología en Cambridge, donde ocupó desde 1979 la Cátedra Lucasiana de Matemáticas. La investigación de Hawking se centró en las leyes fundamentales que rigen el universo. En un trabajo pionero, Hawking y Roger Penrose demostraron que las ecuaciones de la relatividad general implican la existencia de singularidades en el espacio-tiempo. Más tarde, Hawking desarrolló la teoría de los agujeros negros y demostró que estos pueden emitir radiación, en un trabajo memorable en el que combinaba la relatividad general con la teoría cuántica, el otro gran descubrimiento de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Por sus investigaciones, Hawking recibió infinidad de premios y distinciones, y hasta doce doctorados honoris causa.
