Dan Simmons nació en 1948 en Peoria (Illinois, Estados Unidos). Tras dieciocho años dedicados a la enseñanza de la literatura, en 1987 decidió dedicarse a tiempo completo a la escritura. Desde entonces, ha cultivado toda clase de géneros (de la fantasía, al terror y la novela histórica), aunque es conocido sobre todo por su aportación en el campo de la ciencia ficción.

Es autor de Hyperion (ganadora de los premios Hugo y Locus de 1990), primera novela de la aclamada serie «Los cantos de Hyperion», integrada por Hyperion, La caída de Hyperion, Endymion y El ascenso de Endymion. Simmons se ha convertido en un referente indiscutible de la ciencia ficción contemporánea.
