Inventario Uno compiles all the poems published in book form by Mario Benedetti between 1950 and 1985. Some texts, which were set to music, appear in both forms: poem and song.
As Benedetti himself explains, "the volume opens with the most recent production and concludes with the oldest, perhaps with the secret hope that the reader, upon accessing this work through the newest and closest door, will then be tempted to open other doors, for inventory purposes."
The communicative vocation is permanent in the author's work, and readers – who return again and again to his pages – build with Benedetti's poems that certain "family air" that is felt before the familiar landscape, love, the nostalgia of exile, and the wonder of seeing despair transformed into illusion.

Inventario Uno reúne todos los poemas publicados en libro por Mario Benedetti entre 1950 y 1985. Algunos textos, que fueron musicalizados, figuran en sus dos formas: poema y canción.
Como explica el propio Benedetti, “el volumen se abre con la producción más reciente y concluye con la más antigua, quizá con la secreta esperanza de que el lector, al tener acceso a esta obra por la puerta más nueva y cercana, se vea luego tentado de ir abriendo otras puertas, a beneficio de inventario”.
La vocación comunicante es permanente en la obra del autor, y los lectores –que regresamos una y otra vez a sus páginas– construimos con los poemas de Benedetti ese cierto “aire de familia” que se siente ante el paisaje conocido, el amor, la nostalgia del exilio y la maravilla de ver la desesperanza trocada en ilusión.
