"The Protestant Ethic and the "Spirit" of Capitalism" inquires into the origin of the modern capitalist mentality, an enemy and vanquisher of traditionalism, and concludes that such a mentality stems not from capitalist economic development itself, but from the way of life generated by Calvinist-rooted Protestantism, which resulted in a rationalization equivalent to a "demystification" of the world, that is, in its reduction to an object of calculation, exploitation, and domination. This edition, which includes a new preliminary study and is exhaustively revised and improved, reproduces the text published in 1904-1905, including as an Appendix the revisions that Max Weber himself (1864-1920) made for the second edition of 1920, and is completed with a glossary that accounts for the main characters and movements that inspired the historical and spiritual episodes that the work takes as the basis of its analysis. |
