Hypnosis
For ten years, Sigmund Freud was a hypnotist. From 1886 to 1896, he was passionate about hypnosis and used it as part of his practice. The texts he devoted to that period were long considered pre-psychoanalytic, and therefore of little interest. Most were published sporadically in heterogeneous anthologies or in low-circulation journals. More than a century after they were written, these fundamental texts for understanding the genesis of psychoanalysis—hitherto ignored, unknown, or unpublished—have been rescued from oblivion and published, for the first time in book form, thanks to Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, one of the greatest historians of Freud. They are illustrated with curious documents and archival photographs that make us relive the itinerary of the young Dr. Freud, the decisive influence of Charcot and Bernheim, the first patients and the conquest of the favor of the Viennese bourgeoisie.
