It is one of the masterpieces of the French writer Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880) published in 1856. A classic novel about a 19th-century bourgeois marriage that shows how a more or less arranged marriage is not always a guarantee for marital happiness. It is a masterpiece of contemporary universal literature, a model of style for its meticulous and precise, brilliant and sober observation of reality. The protagonist Emma is bored to death with her mediocre husband, the rural doctor Charles Bovary, and seeks escape, first by taking refuge in the world of romantic novels, and later by seeking extramarital love affairs. But unlike what happened in the nobility of the Ancien Régime, in the 19th century, society did not consider these affairs acceptable. Especially among women, who eventually earned social scorn for being adulteresses.

Gustave Flaubert nació en Ruán en 1821. En 1844 abandonó sus estudios de Derecho por razones de salud, lo que le permitió dedicarse exclusivamente a la literatura. Así, en 1846, se retiró en Croisset, un pequeño y tranquilo pueblo normando, donde escribió la mayoría de sus obras. Su primera novela publicada, Madame Bovary, apareció por entregas en la Revue de Paris en 1856, y fue objeto de un juicio por escándalo público, lo que le garantizó el éxito inmediato. Luego vinieron otras obras maestras como Salambó (1862), La educación sentimental (1869), La tentación de san Antonio (1874) y Tres cuentos (1877). En 1880, mientras trabajaba en la inconclusa Bouvard y Pécuchet, publicada póstumamente en 1881, murió en Croisset a la edad de cincuenta y nueve años. Además de narrador, Flaubert también fue autor de numerosas obras teatrales, así como de una voluminosa correspondencia.
