The protagonist Emma is bored to death with her mediocre husband, the rural doctor Charles Bovary, and seeks escape, first by taking refuge in the world of romantic novels, and later by seeking extramarital love affairs. But unlike what happened in the nobility of the Ancien Régime, in the 19th century, society did not consider these affairs acceptable.
