When Tim Kearney, a small-time criminal, slits the throat of a Hells Angels biker and earns a life sentence in a prison full of the deceased's associates, he knows he's a dead man. Until the day the DEA makes him an enticing offer: freedom in exchange for impersonating the legendary drug dealer Bobby Z and thus becoming the bargaining chip that will allow the agency to recover one of its agents.

But something goes wrong and Tim has to improvise an escape across the desert on the US-Mexico border. Hot on his heels are the FBI, a swarm of bikers, drug lords, and a sinister Native American tracking expert complete Don Winslow's new novel.

Con su primera novela, A cool breeze on the underground, fue nominado al Premio Edgar Allan Poe de novela de crimen y misterio. Su siguiente novela Muerte y vida de Bobby Z, fue llevada al cine en 2007. Su última novela, Los reyes de lo cool, es la precuela de Salvajes, que el oscarizado director Oliver Stone convirtió en un éxito en 2012. Actualmente, Don vive en San Diego con su esposa e hijo.
