The writer H. P. Lovecraft, in his relatively short life (1890-1937) perfected the inspiration of his spiritual master Edgar Allan Poe, in terms of conceiving an atmosphere of terror in his narratives and thus creating cosmic terror. He abandoned once and for all the haunted gothic castles, ghosts, vampires and witches to design an underworld of semi-human, extraterrestrial or extra-dimensional beings, and terror is transformed for the reader into a fear of the cosmic, of the universe. In the author's world there is always something threatening, but its nature is never known to such an extent that no matter how much we fight, we remain caught in it. This edition contains illustrations by Alejandro Díaz and is presented in a 13.5 x 19 cm format, with a hardcover binding and a thread bookmark.

H.P. Lovecraft nació en Providence en 1890. Descendiente de colonos británicos del siglo XVII, sobrellevó una infancia enfermiza marcada por una educación autodidacta. Fue un niño precoz. A los tres años ya sabía leer, a los siete comenzó a escribir. Su vida puede entenderse como la consagración de esos dos hábitos. Después de Poe, fue el gran innovador del relato de terror.

La llamada de Cthulhu (1926), El horror de Dunwich (1928), En las montañas de la locura (1931) y La sombra sobre Innsmouth (1931) están consideradas como sus obras capitales. En ellas se cifra el mayor de sus legados al género: el horror cósmico. De sus muchas lecturas, las de Arthur Machen, Lord Dunsany y Algernon Blackwood estuvieron entre sus preferidas.

Ignorado por sus contemporáneos, resignado a su destino solitario, Lovecraft murió a los cuarenta y siete años dejando un vasto número de ficciones, poesías, cartas y ensayos. En 1939 sus amigos emprendieron la edición sistemática de sus trabajos. Hoy son universales y clásicos, como los de Melville o Hawthorne.
