The blind spot
A penetrating analysis of the various forms of self-deception to protect ourselves from anxiety, failure, and pain. Goleman finds evidence of this at all levels: from individual mental activity to the dynamics of an entire society. Understood in this way, self-deception must be considered a psychological defense mechanism against the painful onslaughts of the external world. The human brain is capable of selectively filtering the information it receives, thereby reducing awareness of negative memories and perceptions. This mechanism creates a blind spot that blocks attention and lessens the impact of disappointments. But although self-deception is most often beneficial for psychic and emotional stability, as its function is precisely to preserve it, it can sometimes be dangerous and harmful, both individually and socially. |
