Jo Ellen, a successful photographer, is stalked by a stranger who sends her disturbing photos, among which is one of her mother, who mysteriously disappeared twenty years ago. It is a terrible photo: in it, her mother appears naked, young... and dead.

Desperate, Jo Ellen leaves New York and returns to her home on the Georgia coast. Her family is still marked by what they consider an unmotivated abandonment by her mother. Jo Ellen's presence muddies things, but even more so does the arrival of a handsome young architect with whom she falls in love, and the certainty that her pursuer has followed her there.
