Antonio Machado's (1875-1939) reflective attitude, accentuated over the years, and his professional and artistic conscience frequently compelled him to consider the poetic act. He did so in many of his works, in which, after his autobiographical touches and his confession of faith, a rejection of modernist aesthetics can be appreciated. This is followed by the profession of authenticity and sincerity. Machado disavows the grandiloquence and bombast that had burdened 19th-century poetry and influenced that of the 20th. And he insists on poetry as human communication, as an expression of a metaphysics opposed to the intellectualism and verbal play of the Generation of '27. This volume gathers a selection of his entire body of work, as a sample of the author's extensive repertoire throughout his career and as one of the most important Spanish poets of all time.
