"The younger generations have tirelessly proclaimed the enduring relevance of Valle-Inclán in recent years, seeing in his esperpentos the most certain path to critical theater." Written within a few months of each other, in 1919 and 1920, after a prolonged creative crisis, the two plays collected in this volume are unanimously considered the pinnacle of Valle-Inclán's theater, which is to say they are among the undisputed peaks of 20th-century Spanish (and European) theater, over which they have exerted a persistent influence. Through different paths – since their respective settings are rural Galicia and bohemian Madrid – both mark a turning point in their author's career. From them, he founded his own aesthetic, the "esperpento," with which he aimed to capture "the tragic spirit of Spanish life." Reviews: "A powerful invigorating injection for literature in the Castilian language." "Valle-Inclán, the great renovator of 20th-century Spanish theater." |
