DETALLES

The Third Chimpanzee

In this fascinating, provocative, passionate, and entertaining work, Jared Diamond, a world-leading popular science writer and scientist, investigates how humans have reached where they are and what implications this has for the future.

Humans share 98 percent of their genetic code with chimpanzees. However, humans are the dominant species on the planet, have founded civilizations and religions, have developed complex and diverse ways of communicating, have discovered science, have built cities, and have created astonishing works of art; while chimpanzees remain animals primarily concerned with the basic needs of survival. What is it about that two percent genetic difference that has led to such a divergence between such evolutionarily related species?

Written in his characteristic multidisciplinary style, Diamond's work, a Pulitzer Prize winner for Guns, Germs, and Steel, brings together knowledge from molecular biology, genetics, paleontology, anthropology, and ethology. With all this, he constructs a wonderful portrait of what makes us human, and of the extraordinary meaning that entails.
