Dos cautivos (escrita en 1926 y publicada en España con el título de Las cárceles del alma) es una de las obras que más éxito internacional le dio a Lajos Zilahy. Nutrida con ciertos elementos autobiográficos, en esta novela Zilahy nos narra el idilio en 1913 en Budapest entre el oficial Péter y la joven Miett así como su boda, y cómo todo ello quedará truncado al poco por el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Péter será capturado en el frente ruso, y Miett conocerá a otro hombre?

Zilahy es uno de los novelistas que mejor han retratado la sociedad centroeuropea de la primera mitad de siglo xx. Con una narración realista y vigorosa, (pero también poética, a lo Tolstoi), asistimos a las vicisitudes de unos individuos que se sienten «cautivos» de la Historia convulsa que les tocó vivir, habitantes de una Europa que vivió la contienda mundial como un adiós al Imperio austrohúngaro, un mundo perdido que cambió ya para siempre, indiferente a sus deseos y esperanzas.

Historia de superaciones y frustraciones personales, de heroísmos y cobardías, de supervivencia y de resignación, pero también de esperanza en un futuro mejor, Dos cautivos es una de las grandes novelas románticas del siglo.
